The Founders

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was founded on the campus of Howard University on January 13, 1913 by 22 illustrious women .  These collegiate women endeavored to establish and maintain an honorable and distinguished organization.  These students wanted to use their collective strength to promote academic excellence and to provide assistance to people in need. The first public act performed by the Founders of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority involved their participation in the Women's Suffrage March in Washington D.C., in March of 1913. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was incorporated in 1930. Their vision of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated as a national organization founded on Christian principles, with emphasis on sisterhood and public service has been in effect for ninety-three years.

Through the tremendous efforts of Delta's Founders, the organization continues to thrive as a sisterhood of well over 200,000 college educated women.  There are over 870 chapters residing in the United States, England, Japan (Tokyo and Okinawa), Germany, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, the Bahamas and the Republic of Korea. The major programs of the Sorority are based upon the organizations Five Point Thrust:
